System Administrator I

NGP VAN is seeking a system administrator who will plan, implement and maintain hardware and software in support of our internal office environment as well as public-facing web applications. Candidates will provide end-user support, build new systems, develop and update systems documentation, and collaborate with our distributed IT team.

Like most IT teams, we handle a mixture of break/fix and project work. This position will focus on end-user support, but we have a pretty technical staff. So we expect the System Administrator to spend about half of their time on projects, and about half on end-user support.

Candidates should have the ability to research, recommend, plan and deploy systems, solve problems independently, and work well on cross-functional teams.


End-user technical support experience

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Windows workstation and Server operating systems
  • Experience with Apple products and OS X
  • Experiencing supporting desktop and laptop hardware
  • Understanding of IP networking fundamentals
    • IP addresses, networks, subnet masks, major protocols, etc.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work on many projects at one time in a fast-paced environment

Desired but not Essential:

  • Familiarity with political campaigns and issue advocacy organizations
  • Experience with: 
    • Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure cloud computing platforms
    • Exchange, IIS, SQL Server, SharePoint and Visual Studio
    • VMWare server virtualization products
    • source control, change management and ticket-tracking systems
    • modern Linux systems
    • scripting languages (MS batch file, PowerShell, VBScript, AppleScript, Bash, Perl, etc).
  • Experience managing corporate phones and PBX systems
  • Understanding of enterprise IT operations concepts, including Documentation, Configuration Management, Redundancy, Security, Monitoring, Logging, Risk, Performance, Automation

Note: This is a full-time position located in our Washington DC office. Candidates should be able to lift 50 lbs. Occasional off-hours (nights and weekends) work will be required.
